I think if a better opportunity arises, I shouldn't stay just because it could prove them right and I didn't want to be there. Because if I truly didn't want to be there, I would just quit on my own. More to the point, if I purposefully do a crappy job, and refuse to quit. That would would imply I want to get fired. To which I ask, why would I want to get fired? It would make me look bad and possibly effect future work.
